Kelley’s devotion to design engineering led him to coin the term “design thinking”, which leverages human-centered design methodologies to produce meaningful and value-driven innovations. His contributions include thousands of breakthrough creations, including the first computer mouse for Apple. Before founding IDEO, one of the most influential global product design firms, David Kelley was an engineer for Boeing and NCR.

Innovative Product Leadership: The Emerging Chief Product Officer
We offer learning experiences for professionals, educators, and students from beyond Stanford. Design thinking is a methodology for creative problem solving. You can use it to inform your own teaching practice, or you can teach it to your students as a framework for real-world projects. The set of resources on this page offer experiences and lessons you can run with your students. Enroll in the full program for a more robust design thinking experience. Program enrollment includes one year of access to this course and much more.

Students emerge with both a strong engineering depth and technical know-how, as well as creative, visual thinking abilities and a deeply human-centered orientation to problem-solving. Their ability to seamlessly integrate across these two “right brain / left-brain" ways of thinking empowers them to make and build products, services, and experiences with transformative potential in service of people. D.school classes are open to students enrolled at Stanford.

Projects have spanned every type of design from physical manufacturing, to web and mobile design, to AI research and engineering. The time frame for projects has ranged between 2 weeks to full summer. Once you sign up for the platform, we’ll send a list of sample projects to help you begin and tailor for your needs. There is no cost to become a Design Formation Host Company. You can post projects and gain access to this talent network right away. And there are no fees if you choose to hire a student.

Design can activate us as creators and change the way we see ourselves and others. Design is filled with optimism, hope, and the joy that comes from making things change by making things real. We believe that diversity leads to better design, and opens up a greater range of creative possibilities. Like in life, there is no single right answer in a d.school class. We give students ample opportunities to experiment, take creative risks, and fail. It's great preparation for real-world problem solving—because it is real-world problem solving.
Anyone who wants to become more familiar with design thinking can use these activities, tools, and how-tos. Whether you're a college student, business owner, freelance artist, or corporate executive, or simply a curious person, this collection of resources will help you unlock creative thinking in whatever challenge you're tackling. The d.school Action Lab will help you design more human-centered, equitable and effective initiatives, services and programs. The Lab is an intensive, hands-on opportunity to dive into and move forward your own team project. The Action Lab provides the structure and support for about 90 hours of work for learning and doing. Students will also select a domain focus area to gain added knowledge in a field of interest to them.

We’ve ranked and reviewed each college or university to deliver the top options available in 2022. We use innovative methodologies in all our programs to help budding fashionistas & tinkerers to explore & build their creative confidence by empowering them to make their ideas a reality. However, we encourage Host Companies to post projects to think about what they truly need accomplished and to ensure they will find the right person. If your company has an internship program aligned with our student’s skills, simply post the overview to the internship along with information about where the student can submit an application. We’ve curated a collection of resources from our classes and workshops for you to explore.
Figueroa said she doesn’t believe just her academics got her into so many colleges, she’s involved in nearly a dozen clubs, ranging from Latino leadership groups to environmental clubs. The Santa Ana native also tutors, plays tennis, and is involved in student government. California has long been a magnet for artists and creative thinkers, from the Hollywood dream-makers to the tech visionaries of Silicon Valley. In a world overflowing with excess and waste, fashion upcycling emerges as a beacon of sustainability and creativity. This program has been so inspirational, that my daughter is now planning to pursue fashion design in college. Our daughters keep returning to your camp year after year and always ask for more.
Our methods become a shared language for groups to navigate the ups and downs of messy challenges. Fellows are talented professionals at points in their career when they seek new ways to influence their fields. They learn design thinking inside the d.school as they advance an ambitious project from the real world. Then they relaunch themselves and create change, with the added benefit of a new set of skills they can teach others.
